Some low water flies....

I've spent the last few nights re-reading "Greased Line Fishing for Salmon" by Jock Scott, in preperation for the dog days of summer, and it's fishing.

I was inspired to tie some of the great low water patterns listed in the book. The left row from top to bottom are: Logie, Jockie, and Blue Charm. The Pintail winged fly on the right is the "Silver Blue".

The BM wings were quite a challenge. I've tied BM wings before but cheated with a bit of turkey for support underneath. But not on these, they are BM and Pintail only (Except for the Logie, that has the yellow underwing).

The other hard part about tying these is finding decent low water hooks these days. These flies are tied on some vintage irons and just look better in my opinion that what's out there today. (anybody got a stash of vintage low water's they want to sell?)

I hope to be fishing the greased line with these flies later this summer.

Very nice Aaron! I'm working on tying all of my flies much sparser than I used to.

In the PNW, it may be a while before we see low water. I fished the Klickitat this weekend and it was wadeable, but high. Managed to land three steelhead that were chrome bright.

Those look lovely Aaron, very cleanly tied. Let's hope the wet weather has subsided and you get a chance to fish those before long.

Beautiful flies Aaron .... super tight
There is a special feeling you get when you swing these old time patterns

Jack Cook at Tolt River Anglers (site sponsor) has some Partridge Code N hooks on hand that would suit this style perfectly . He also has the Code M hooks if you are looking for a heavy weight iron .

Another option would be to call Poppy at the Red Shed . He had some Kamasan B-180 hooks that are much like the Code N hooks . These are very strong and hold a good point even after de-barbing . Never had any issues with these .

Great flies, Aaron. Perhaps you'll give me another lesson on the G.R. this fall. I'd especially like some help getting wings to turn out half as nice as yours! Hope those flies put you in touch with some chrome!

Absolutely superior tying my friend. Having observed the profiles of your full dressers (a few years back) it comes as no surprise that you gravitate towards these patterns and have tied them so exceedingly well

Thanks guys.

Yes, the BM wings are straight up. It's very tricky to get them compressed and not have them fold on you...
