Tri-Color Strip Wing - Marty style variant

Another go at a fly from Marty and Dec's DVD. Had to use gold rib and purple seal in place of black for front third of body. And red thread instead of hot pink. Also, natural gp tippet instead of pink. Kind of a messy wing.

Cheers - Dimitri

Just a newbie question- How do you get the hear to be red. Is it the thread or do you paint it that way.

several ways

1) switch to red thread from white to build the head

2) felt tip red marker over the white thread

3) Veniard red cement over dry clear cement

Jack's ways are probably better. I switched to red thread before wrapping the body then after whipping use a dab of super glue followed by 2 or 3 coats of Sally Hansen hard as nails (clear). Letting it dry between applications.

Nicely done, even if the wing has a few small splits in it (what you refer to as a "messy wing").

The reason to avoid little splits in a strip featherwing is any small split near the tie-in will end up split the whole length of the wing in very short order when a fly is fished, and thus, the wing is ruined.

I also change thread color as you did because it is easier than painted white thread with red permanent marker or painted the head red with red head lacquer.

Your tying has shown much improvement, keep up the good work. A small suggested adjustment to help improve your flies, work on keeping the turns of ribbing the exact (or nearly exact) distance apart all the way from the rear of the fly (1st turn of ribbing) to the front (last or 5th turn of ribbing). One of the characteristics of the best tied flies is ribbing that is equal distance between turns.

Yes ... but

Okay, the wing is a little messy, but the placement and orientation is the way I like it.

You have debard the hook, and place the tinsel high for fishing! The dubbing is very nice, and possibly the purple could have come in sooner. I like the proportions and the hackle is just right. I am not sure the wing ends at a common point, but it feels right. The tail, the material seems to be a little thin on the black "bars" - choice or picture?

I change to red thread after the body, and then use Venaird's Cellire.

I would want this fly in my box, and would be very happy to use it (and if necessary lose it - in the trees or on the rocks). I would keep a few spares to, as I would not want to walk down the bank without knowing I had this fly in my box. I like dark blue flies and used them many times.

Great looking fly. I really enjoy Martys ties, and you've done this one great justice.

Makes me want to tie a few up, might have to just do that before Saturday.

Cheers.
