The Lady Vi

This fly was tied for and named after my wife. Also I tied one on a pin backed salmon hook. Let me know what you think.

Thosr are pretty cool too! I have never fished a fly with gp crested wings,,, how does it look in the swing,, does it stay somewhat in position or trail straight back?? Thanks and really nice work!

I think technically they would be consitered Horns or topping. I am new to this type of tying so your question might be answered better by others.I have never fished with them so I really don't know how they would look durring the swing. I just saw them on a number of traditional flies and thought they looked cool.... On another note I believe the wing itself is called Ranger style. I believe Ard (Hardyreels) Tied some up that I thought were awsome awhile back. Do a search for "Ranger" and I think you will find it. After I was done I realized that I left several elements of the Ranger Wing out, the next one will have all the elements.
Thanks,
Rich

As a friend of mine would say... "Sweetzorrrr!!!!!!" that fly is awesome! Will have to put this one in my long list of flies to do someday.

Rich,

They are not "Ranger style wings" because the Ranger style wings have jungle cock extending past the tippets inside the tippets, a second pair of tippets over the first pair with the end of the second pair right at the second bar of the first pair, and finally a pair of jungle cock as sides over the tippet wings.

I would make some small changes though. I'd make the tail flatter and a bit longer, This is pretty easy to do by using a crest feather that is longer than normal. Just mount it further up the feather toward the tip and it will be both longer and flatter.

Secondly, I'd make the topping crest feather (it is not a horn, it is a topping. Horns are almost exclusively single macaw tail feather fibers added to either the top or sides of the fly, but going over the top of the fly) not be longer than the end of the tail or slightly inside the end of the tail. When the topping is tied longer than the tail, it disrupts the ballance of the fly and also makes it swim a bit weird if fished.

I like this composition (materials and colors) A LOT !!!! A bit of tweaking along Flytyer's lines could turn this fly into a real gem. Well done

I plan to retie this again with a proper Ranger wing. I actually researched the ranger wing after I tied the fly and realized I was missing some elements.

Scout.
Your top fly is pretty damn nice,, and i dig the sentiment of tying it for your bride....very cool
Russ, as usual gives very sound advise.
There is an old Atlantic salmon pattern called the Lady Amherst that employs the same wing material(amherst pheasant) as you have used and the overall "look/silhouette" are similar,,though miles apart in the dressing.
The Lady Amherts is still very popular on many Gaspe salmon rivers and used under a wide array of river conditions...and is very productive.
Good luck on your next one as i am sure it will improve by leaps and bounds!
