experimenting with pheasant

I've got a bunch of ringneck pheasant feathers I've been experimenting with. I've been mixing them in for years, but lately I've found them to be my favorite material. I've been lurking here for years and enjoying all the flies, so I thought it was time to contribute a little after I've learned so much from all of you. Here's a couple recent creations.

body: 1/2 orange floss, 1/2 hot orange ice dub in dubbing loop
rib: small gold oval
counter rib: fine gold oval
body hackle: ringneck pheasant rump one side stripped
wing: bucktail
hackle: ringneck pheasant rump folded

tail: ringneck pheasant rump underfeather
body: ringneck pheasant rump underfeather spun in dubbing loop
rib: medium silver oval
hackle bracing: dyed black pheasant rump underfeather in dubbing loop
hackle: ringneck pheasant rump folded

These are both smaller flies, tied on size 5 and 6 hooks, and meant to be swung just under the film. Fish seem to like them as much as I do.

Pheasant and such...

Nice indeed. That second one especially would be an excellent closing/comeback fly for Bulkley/Morice in low water...sort of like a Spade with a little extra body movement. Don't doubt that the fish like 'em very well too.

both those patterns rock! Would be fantasti brown patterns in nz and anywhere they are really, in my experience browns seem to like natural colours with rainbows liking the flashy or brighter colours

Pete,

Very trouty looking ties, incidentally I call steelhead trout also when I write, shorter word. By the look of your avatar you know how to use them.

Nice entry,

Ard

Indeed browns will love them but all of our trout here are rainbow / steelhead trout and these guys like their browns and grays when it comes to the menu.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I've been spending a lot of time as the vise lately, filling my Fall boxes. I'll post a few more flies when I have a little time and flies that are up to the high standards I usually see here.
