Orvis Streamline 1510 spey rod
Has anyone heard anything about Orvis's Streamline spey rods?
They seem like they would be a good back up, or starter rod, but I can't find any reviews on it. They got them on sale for $129.00 USD and I am tempted to pick one up for that price. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.a...subcat_id=7343 |

The Streamline rods in the smaller sizes were pretty nice casting sticks when matched number for number with Delta lines.
If you have a use for a backup 15'-10wt then I would say it was an OK deal. It has a 30 day return privilege so it would seem you can't go wrong. If it doesn't suit you send it back.

What a deal
FishAholic,
Got one with the $25.00 Orvis Gen. 3 line on sale. The 10/11 @722 grns. feels a little light (but oh so slick, its a shooter), so have the 12wt. @812 grns. coming to see if it is the sweet one. This rod will surprise you it has the power. My son will most likely post some more details on this surprisingly good rod. I need to try a Delta on this one, as per "Poppy" Jack PS you notice "Poppy" knows his stuff every time.

Thanks for the info Poppy I'll keep that in mind.
Walkthe Walk - Thats good to know about the line. I think I'll pick a rod up and the line (12wt?). If nothing else I could lend it out to buddies to thrash trees with ![]() What type and size of reel are you using, and does it balance the rod? Thanks, FA |

The reel I'm using is not the standard spey type. It is a Sage 6012 made for a 12 wt. salt single hander. Its what I had available so its doable. Just a tad light but close enough. It has 300 yds. of Cortland salt water Teflon coated backing and the whole 10/11 line fits nicely. I will have to cut either the backing or the line to fit the 12 wt. I will have the 12 wt. line Wednesday and will cast it Thursday and give you a report. Boy I love that rod!
Jack

How'z it, FA!
The only reel I had available was my brand new Galvan T12.. was planning on using it for the salt, but with 2 spools there's no worries about pulling double duty.
Like walkthe walk, I too feel that my reel is a bit light, but not by that much.. This rod is much lighter than you would think! My Dad and I were unintentional "celebrities" for the day last Thursday at the casting pond in Long Beach.. All the spey guys were eager to throw our new rods.. I mean, what does this newbie know about spey, so I was just as eager to have anyone who wanted to try out my new rod so I could get some feed back... An FFF Casting Instructor was a bit surprised with how light this 15' stick was and was truly impressed with the amount of "On Reserve" power the rod had!.. However he DID feel that the Orvis 11 WT Generation 3 line was a little light for his taste.. (the 12 WT line is on its way!) All the other guys just raved about the rod and could not get over the low price for both the rod and the line?! Less than $160 bucks for a 10/11 WT rod and a line??!! Cummon... that's ridiculous! One even mentioned that this rod was one of the best casting big weighted rod's he has ever casted at ANY price! That made me feel pretty good about the purchase! That Thursday, with my new equiptment... I did quite well with my casting, if I may be so bold as to say... After my teacher arrived and threw my new stick and string around a bit.. He thought that the 11 WT line paired up well with the rod and said he wouldn't change a thing... Well... for a master spey caster, I guess!! But Dad and I still ordered the On Sale $25.00 dollar 12 WT Spey Lines just fer $h!t's-n-giggles.. My teacher says.. As a spey caster gets better, he can throw a lighter line... So we'll see.. I'll report back...

Check out Poppy's used tackle section for a Hardy Salmon #3 w/ extra spool, should fulfill the balance requirements.

10/11 WT, but not a Beast!
Surprisingly this rod is QUITE light!
Not a telephone pole at all!!! The experienced spey casters who have thrown this stick and string, were quite impressed in fact blown away by the power and ease of casting.. I'm just saying....

FishAholic,
Remember these reels are modern very light 12 wt reels "a Hardy Salmon #3" or along those lines should do the job. All rods of that size will be close to the same. BTW the balance point with my reel is about 8" for the of top of cork. ![]() Jack

- Touch n' go - I trust Orvis to make good solid (light mind you
) products and I also believe that you guys know what your talking about. Since I am new to spey fishing and this is my first setup it should be good starting point. I tend to make things complicated and try make everything exact. ![]() - Hooksetter1 - Those are beautiful reels but they are more then I want to spend for my first setup. But when I get in to spey fishing more, look out wallet here I come - walkthe walk - Very true there. I think for the price and since this is my first setup, I went with Hardy's discontinued sliver colored Uniqua #5 with a spare spool. It probably won't balance the rod but I am not sure how much balance is important for making good casts So my setup looks like this now: - Rod: Orvis Streamline 10/11 wt. spey rod. - Reel: Hardy's Uniqua #5 w/spare spool. - Line: Orvis Gen. 3 floating spey line 10wt and 12wt. And Airflo's NW Skagit Multi tip in 9/10 650 gr. 750 gr. w/ tip.(I got good deals on them) So far I think its a good starter setup for my, I will be fishing for Pike, Walleye mainly here in Alberta, which means big flies and long casts on the rivers I fish. This summer should be a blast! ![]() please tell us how that 12wt. Orvis line works on that Streamline too. Thanks for the input guys. Happy casting

I'm sure you are just trying to make the best decision with what you want to do for the water you will be fishing and with the budget you have... So yeah.. a lot of us are "complicated" like you.. ![]() Quote:
It's good that you are going the longer rod route being new to spey casting.. My teacher recommended my Dad and I to go this direction in learning Spey and this is why... He said starting out with a 15' rod learning Scottish casting and really learn the proper form and technique you could then do an type of casting.. It will be a little more challenging to learn as a 15 footer will be less forgiving than say a Skagit set up.. But once you learn proper form and technique you can go in any direction you want.. Skagit, Scandi or stay with a long line... That sounded great to me and that's the direction Dad and I went... Besides to throw a 15' stick and a long line you gotta have a pretty big piece of water.. Later this year.. Dad and I will be getting shorter rods with either a Skagit or Scandi set up for the smaller waters that we'll be fishing... But fer now we will continue practicing with our big sticks..

Thanks for the skagit info Touch n' go, I'll check in to that.
Orvis called and said they didn't have any 10 wt. gen 3 spey line left so I opted for the 11wt. instead. As for learning to spey cast its going to have to come from youtube and any books or videos that I can find. I better make sure there is nothing around me, or near me when I start casting cause there will be line flying everywhere. ![]() And Its going to be fun!
