what is best for burkie 8139

Using Rio 500 gr head. Looking for other options re: shooting head.
Any and all suggestions welcomed.

I like a heavier line ... a 630 grain airflo compact skagit is what I have.
I suppose the new skagit flight at 625 would work as well. It is 27 feet so should work fine on the rod.

The Burkheimer website lists the grain weight from 500 - 630 grains ... So I'm at the top end ... let the rod do the work.

When using Scandinavian Head, depending on how deeply you would like to lead the rod 450-480 gr works very well.

I agree with the above:

I am most happy with a 460 grain Rio AFS head for Scandi style/Single Spey Touch-and-go casting. For winter steelhead I am using a 600 grain Airflo Skagit Compact (plus tips).

It is a quite a powerful rod!

Where and what do you plan to use it for?

Best,
Markus

Most of the Burkheimer jedi I know like 600grns to 630grns on that rod. Why not test drive the 570, 600, and 630 Airflo Compact skaj heads and see which one best meets your needs. That way you'll find out for sure what works for "you".

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

best is in the hands of the rod holder

I like scandi 500-550, skagit 570-650 (add tips to that), and lean towards the lighter end for rods older than 2-3 years. Some years ago my main winter line on this rod was a 27' long 400 gr head + 15' tips, with pretty big flies, and it was crisp and light if you were on top of the timing. Truth is, this rod tosses so many different lines that you owe it to yourself to find what works best for you. My favorites are longer lines, 65-70'

I am using for winter steel head. I have been using rio 500gr head. Have tried the Airflo 540 and there is a dramatic improvement. I did not know how much more I could push the rod, but if you all are using up to 600gr then I will try.
again,
thanks,

SCANDI?
Aflo Compact 510 with 15 ft Inter Poly and a weighted fly
.......Try a 480 with 15 ft Inter Poly and an unweighted fly.

Light, powerful, effortless and wind resistant!
(Simply an amazing set-up)

SKAGIT?
Aflo Comp Skagit 600 with 10-15' T-14

What more could a guy want, eh?

Greg

I'll echo what's been said...

...and say that the 630 gr Compact Skagit seems to be right on the money. This rod has a huge window and I've fished 550gr skagits all the way up to 660gr, with a preference towards the heavier end of the spectrum.

For shorthead spey lines the Delta 9/10 is a phenomenal match for this one, and will turn over big tips and flies. The Nextcast Winter Authority #9 is also very good.

Scandi lines would include the 510 and 540 Compact Scandi from Airflo, as well as the older Airflo scandi at 550gr, and any Vision head in the 500-550 range.
