Battenkill River VT & NY ...or other nearby trout river

I live in California and am going to be visiting my daughter and her husband ( Oct.1-7, 2009 ) who live in Saratoga Springs, NY outside of Albany NY. While they're at work, I'd like to do some fly fishing, does anyone have any recommnendations on nearby rivers, beats, guides, private waters, etc. in that area. I won't need lodging...nor probably my spey rod. Thanks, Buck

Those are good options, you also have the ausable river in the lake placid, NY. A bit more of a hike from Saratoga Springs. I would also look into the Metawee River in Vermont. Small water, pretty water. Wild Trout. They haven't stocked it since the 70s. There are some nice sections right near the VT/NY border. It isn't Spey water. The fish are tough, but you should be able to hook up on some fish in the 10-12 inch range.

Battenkill, Ausable, and Lake George Tribs.

I think the battenkill is the best bet at that time of the year. I have not fished the ausable in the fall but it must be gorgeous. I'm at school at UAlbany and go fishing every weekend. There are many other fishing spots to go to around albany that carry a good amount of trout. I will post later when I have time to make a list.

The metawee is really low right now, that is the sections in VT. I think parts on the NY side could be fishing well. Sounds like Will may have some better advice for your upcoming trip...

I'd ask Orvis (1-800-548-9548; www.orvis.com). They've been on or near the Battenkill forever, and must have rock-solid connections with local guides, if not their own.

We're getting rain all week here so both the Battenkill and Mettawee should have plenty of water.. maybe even a bit high. Bring your streamers and a wet tip line just in case. The Battenkill can give up some big fish in the fall. I would call the Orvis store in Manchester VT 802 362 3750 not the 800 # in Roanoke. There are guides around but you can do it yourself too there's a fair amount of access in both NY and VT.
