What size rod?

older 4"- 4.25" reels by JW Young, Hardy and a few other English makers are the standards. The Spey Co. reels seem to be a rare example of modern reels that measures up to the classics.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

The Spey Co reels are great and for the price, a steal. But I would not trade my Perfects for anything.

Let's not forget the Peerless 4A. Great line capacity and nice sound.

Can anyone shed any light on these Olson reels?

Any info appreciated.

In addition to the Hardy models, the Peerless 4A, and what's made by The Spey Company, there are a bunch of recent additions. The Olson reel that several have mentioned is made by the same William Olson (Inland on this board) who made fine drag reels in years' past. Within the last six months or so he has developed an S-handled classic styled reel that is click only. Al Bellinger has two sizes of his Classic series that are gear and pawl only. One is 4" and the other is 4.5". I've used the 4.5" and really like it. Newest on the scene is Stefan Brusky, who is making 3.5" and 4" models in both a narrow and a wide frame that feature a very rugged non-directional click system along with S-handle (and a beauty) and black and silver classic appearance. What was once an almost total vacuum except for Hardy products and vintage reels is now becoming fairly competitive.

Was pretty impressed with the model you had in Newaygo.

Cascapedia's are only a hair under $500.00 these days. The local shop owner said some people are turning them down as their not as exclusive as they once were.

Last couple months I have been intrigued with the works of Julius Vom Hofe. Classic reels, but can be found within an average person budget.
