11' 8 wt. Switch - Sage Z-Axis or Loomis GLX?

Considering getting into the switch rod craze and was curious as to the pros and cons of these two models, their differences, etc.

Also, any line recomendations for each based off of your experience(s)?

Thanks in advance.

I got the Z Axis 8 about a week ago. I have been playing with lines on it since. I got the Indicator Taper for it because that is what I will do primarily with it. NOT a 2 handed line. A very short heavy head that will turn over anything.

I like the rod. Good Feel. I have not casted the GLX. I would try both and see which one you like.

Hi,

Don't forget the T&T DH 1107 and the Burkheimer 7115-4 and 8115-4.

Cheers,

Rob

Hey Steelheadbum,

play out your thoughts based upon the above questions.... I just got the 7110 and will be using it in both manners as you question above. I am curious as to why you ask and how that would affect how you might line it etc.....also the surf context really peaks my interest.

Have you ruled out the Scott T2H 8 wt switch as an option? Nice stick/I haven't had a chance to fish or cast mine yet but looking fwd to it. If you haven't tried it already you might want to consider it.

Guys,

Thanks for the information thus far. My intentions are to use this rod a few ways:

1. Fishing out of a boat and swinging (prob. a skagit set up to assisit throwing possibly larger flies). I don't like using my traditional two handers in the boat - too much rod for a small area - especailly with two anglers.

2. Fishing indicators (who am I kiding? bobbers), when suspending nymphs over structure in the colder seasons or when the rivers are crowded and fish are in woody seclusion.

3. From time to time on smaller rivers wading and with small sink-tips.

I live in Michigan and mostly fish the larger rivers. I prefer 8wts. over 7's because I like to have extra rod to bring a fish in rather than have to chase it. As such, I have selected the Sage and Loomis as my final considerations due to their flex/action and brand loyalty. I'm just trying to get more input on the difference between the two rods and on the Loomis Native Run GLX single spey in general - does anyone own this rod? I cast it, but haven't fished it. Yet. It seems ideal, at least for me.

I also fish a lot of Scott's and did use the Scott switch and was disappointed with its failure to bury the hook when nymphing with it - a nice casting rod however and I am sure it will be great for the swing when a fish sets the hook on its own. I need the versitility to do both swing and nymphing.

Thanks again for your prior input and I look forward to more.

How big are your current 2 handers, what kind of boat?

SteelheadBum,

Thanks for playing out your train of thought on the 7110 and 8110 Sages. It really solidified that I made the right decision for what I am doing. I am in Ohio as you said, so the 7110 will work well for me I believe. I'm looking forward to getting it....should be here is a couple weeks.

Flybum

I have fished both the sage and loomis 11' 7 weights and both are nice sticks. Overall I liked the sage better.
