The AFS heads were apparently designed to be used with Rio Versileaders. Is there any information out there that would recommend which Versileaders should be used with a particular AFS head? For example: what length Versileader should be used with the AFS 7/8 F? Which versileader (length and sink rate) should be used with the AFS 8/9 Sink 4? From what I can gather the versileaders come in 10' and 15' lengths and include a floating versileader, plus 5 other sinking versileaders. Any clues as to what works best with what and is best for a particular situation?
Thanks: DH

Up to wt. 7/8 used 10' with 8/9, 10' or 15', starting with 9/10 go with 15'.
Saying that they are heavier then Airlfo. For example 10' 3.9"/sec by Rio weights ca. 66 gr, while Airlfo very fast sink weights 51 gr. Rio 10' 5.6"/sec weights near 95 gr, while Airflo 10' extra fast sink 71 gr. You will need to cut off 3' for lighter leader and more for heavier. Just play with them, and don;'t expect them to turn over 4" weighed leach as they were not designed to do so. BTW, I don't see how 5/6 or 6/7 heads can turnover 95 gr tip without cutting them at least 7-10'. Most likely they were designed ( 5/6 and 6/7) for much lighter leader or just plain floating which weights ca. 36 gr. Zb |

I just read through another recent Speypages thread in which Speybro mentions that for the AFS Head
"This is why the new VersiLeaders have been designed. They are quite a different design to our old 7ft and 12ft leaders and also Airflo's Polyleaders. The 10ft and 15ft VersiLeaders have been designed specifically for the AFS head and AFS OutBound. The loops, taper and density distribution are all made to complement these heads. As a guideline, we have designed the 10ft leaders for the lighter lines and shorter rods - up to a 13ft rod and the 7/8 Head. For bigger rods and heavier heads go with the 15 ft VersiLeaders (unless you have a bigger fly or a head wind). I will say one thing about getting depth with these lines, the AFS Sink 4 is an incredibly good and easy casting line - it is a flier! You don't need to add a tip or a VersiLeader, just 6 ft of level of 15 - 20 lb nylon and it is as effortless (for a line that has 35 ft or more of sinking portion) as you could want! It has been a great line so far on the Salmon, here in Idaho, catching plenty of fish...." Based upon the above information from Speybro I don't need any versileaders for the AFS Sink 4 Heads. I probably do need some of them for the other AFS Shooting Heads. BTW: I already use the floating, 1.5 ips and the 5.6 ips versileaders in 10' lengths with the AFS 7/8 F with great effect. Now if it would stop raining... DH
