Practice

Alberto's comment about practicing once a week reminded me of the importance of casting practice. I see lots of golfers at the driving ranges on my way home from work each day but rarely see anyone out practicing their flycasting, and I've never seen anyone out practicing their spey casting. Of course, maybe that's because the driving range is probably not the best place to practice your spey casting...

Anyways, whenever I teach a school or private lesson I really encourage everyone to get out as soon as possible and practice. Practice is the only way to reinforce newly acquired skills and build new ones. If you don't have moving water nearby, stillwater works just fine (in fact I maintain that stillwater is a great place to learn and practice because you have to do everything right in order to cast on stillwater since you don't have a current to tension the line for you), and grass casting is worthwhile as well.

Practice

I have a practice routine so I can develope casting skills and techniques. My main goal is to be able to subconsciously cast in any given spey fishing situation with Control, Comfort and Confidence. Spey (double-handed) fishing time is precious and I want to enjoy it. Practice offers me the possibility to fish with, Control, Comfort and Confidence. My .02
