A fellow who lives here on the coast and was a Hardy casting instructor advocated closing your eyes when making the forward cast. It seems when you shut off one sense(sight) the other senses will be enhanced (touch or feel).................Try it, it works!

He's watching the running line shoot from the basket. Helps to keep your macrame knots from getting too tight.

This YouTube link has Salmon Distance casting clip from recent Nordic Open 2011 contest. Max 15Ft rod and max 55g floating shooting head which usually is 60Ft or longer.

Ulrik Röijezon who won 5wt Trout Distance (36,9m ~121Ft) gets his hair more buffed up at 0:50

Actually fly line hit can be dangerous and safety classes are needed although there is no hook used because fast mowing line might cut or injure eyes.

Ronny Landin 0:55 forward winning cast was 51,3m ~168.3Ft

Yes max 55g (~848gr) shooting head which must float. Most use lengths around 18...20m but I think they select the taper and length using wind speed and direction prediction. Running line must be >0.35mm. ~55m (180ft) winning casts have become common.

I'm just having trouble accepting this basket approach. Looks so much like cherry picking. Would it be even safe falling into the water with a basket on your belt and 20 meters of coiled line ready to get wrapped around your neck?

Or would you rather have 20 meters of coiled line wrapped around your feet when ya fall in?

Basket has many places for it's use. Don't have to worry about getting coils correct in your hand, less chance of them getting tangled into the reel or lower hand when you release. Loose line around twigs, branches and small rocks if wading shallow. I like the use of them especially fishing the beaches for searuns and salmon. You get the waves coming in pushing your line all over the place, saves the line from getting damaged and mono running line that likes to sink.

Also you don't get as much seaweed caught in your line, and it is easier to move along the beach with the line in/on a stripping basket , rather than dragging it behind you.

Hi Cornelis

Tellis has been working in Norway the last months, so try again, but World championships are just around the corner so it might take a while before he can answer.

Cheers
Lasse
