South Thompson near Kamloops

I've tried for Chinook on the ST, but not much for trout. I haven't seen a lot of fly fishers on the river, but I read about good rainbow fishing below the reds during spawning.

Is anyone fishing the S T for trout? I think there are some big ones in there that would make a good catch for my new DH 5wt.

I've heard it was great everywhere for rainbows. Haven't tried it though. Ask the fly shops in your area. I've seen large stonefly hatches on it when exploring.

It looks I have to go upstream a little, around Lafarge. I've been walking down to the Valleyview boat launch to practice casting, and hoped the fishing would be ok there. But it sounds like it's too sandy there and not good for trout. I will keep an eye on it as the river goes down though, so far I've only seen small coarse fish.

There are trout spread through out the entire reach. I've caught them everywhere, including where you were. During the fry out-migration it can be quite exciting with bull trout chasing the fly right up onto the beach.

The fish in the S. Thompson seem to be wanderers . Here today - gone tomorrow . If you`d like to get out - after the river drops 20 feet or so , let me know .

And you are correct . The fishing can be good below the salmon redds . There will be fish that follow the salmon from the Thompson itself , as well as fish coming up from Kamloops Lake , and fish dropping down from Shuswap Lake . Some of these fish will be very large - if you can find them .

Any chance of dropping 20 ft by the end of Aug guys? I saw some pics of normal conditions and pics of it now,looks crazy.Got a trip booked out there then,here's hoping..

It will be down by the end of August and fishable-consider spikes or cleats-can be very slippery.

Sounds good. I'll keep plugging away down there and see what happens. It's a five minute walk, so I'll often stroll down for a few casts. I'd like to head out, when the water drops a bit more, I will drop you a line then - or please let me know if you want to go.

Everything should be back to normal by the end of August. I heard on the radio that Shuswap Lake reached one in thirty year level. The hot weather we're having now will probably bring down most of the remaining snow. Shuswap is a big lake, but the South Thompson is running at more than 1000 m3/s right now.
