I go through casting slumps where it feels like I don't even know how to cast a fly rod.

What do I do? I usually take a rest, and try something different. Shorten or lengthen my leader by a foot or two. Tie on a different bug (lighter or heavier), concentrate on fishing, not casting.

I had a great piece of advice last week when I was trying to belt out 90' casts into wind on a switch rod to fish a particularly difficult piece of a pool. Someone said "don't try so hard". Just simply that helped, and I was able to go back to fishing rather than struggling through trying to make something happen that just didn't want to.

matt95,

Do you live in the Rogue Valley ?

If so call me some time and let's see if we can get together.

541-770-4766 or rmeiser@charter.net

Two of the guys that work in the shop are past or present Rogue guides with 25 years between them, so we as a group may have a few tricks up our sleeves.

The Rogue has actually been fishing pretty good of late (it's that time of year)

Matt, don't pass this offer up. Bob and crew are the best and definitely good guys. Half a day with these guys will take months if not years off your learning curve and it will be fun.

Best Regards,
sixheads

Watch the new film, "Low and Clear". You will come to peace with your fishless days. Fish is incidental to steelheading. :-)

I actually think that steelhead don't exist. It's just a figment of our imagination.

Bob-yes I live in the valley (Talent) I'll shoot you an email and see if I can work out a time to give you a call. I'm a senior in high school so I don't have a ton of free time to be on the phone haha.

Verendus- I'll definitely check out the film, I've been meaning to give it a look.

Thanks for all the feedback
Matt

Well with fall sports being done with, I finally have some free time for fishing and learning! Went out yesterday and tuesday, nothing to show for it, but I'm definitely staying confident and excited about it. Tomorrow I'll be floating a section of the Rogue in my pontoon and fishing every piece of fishy water that I can swing a fly through.

Hope everyone else is enjoying the fall so far! Tight Lines everybody.

Matt

Let us know how you did, Matt.

And keep in mind that you can still enjoy the outdoors with a float or spinning rod, even when you're catching too many fish.

Well I spent a full day on the water, fished a lot of good looking spots.

I didn't get a single grab on my two hander, but I did end the day with a hook up on a copper john with my single hander. Had it on for about 15 seconds before it came undone.
So even though I didn't touch one on the swing, I still hooked a steelhead on a fly rod!

Matt:
It was great to fish with you today! I enjoyed sharing a favorite run on my local flow with you this morning. Too bad no fish came up for our skaters, but it was a perfect morning anyway. Keep at it - your casting looks good and you were covering water well.

Thanks a bunch Todd, it was nice to not fish alone for once! I tied up some more skaters this afternoon/evening, so I'll be getting after it this week. Thanks for the words of encouragement, can't wait to do it again sometime.
