I have also built a few rods over the years myself, and here is my advice. Buy the best blank and components that you can afford. Do not go cheap. Do not try to rush. If you are not in the mood, put the project away untill you are. This is going to be a fun experience, so take your time and you will be a proud person when you are finished with your project.

Great Advice - I have had rods sit on the bench for a few months until I get the itch. It seems like right when I get going on one I start thinking about the next.

If your not turning your own cork but want to do your own wraps I would strongly advise going with a Meiser RTW kit. His cork work is outstanding.

Looking at a Meiser 13'6 MKS cost break down is as follows:
Blank - $265
Blank and Guides - $320
Blank, Guides, Cork ring - $405
Ready to Wrap - -$505

Cork quality is a crap shoot these days unless your will to pay the premium of $2 a ring from outfits like C&D trading or REC and even then there is no guarantee.
