switch rod reels?

looking to buy a reel for my 10'6" 7/8 switch rod, what are you guys using on these rods, should i just be using a line size up for a reel, was thinking of using an abel super 8 or 9, with a standard spool for extra capacity, would this be a good fit or do you have any other recommendations, i can get this reel for $385 instead of paying $550 for the abel switch

Abel

Just went through the same issue myself.......opted for the Super series in lieu. A couple of Oregon shops have some smoking deals on them right now. I picked up one on Sat....they are a very nice machine!

I use Danielsson reels and my L5W 6nine is the perfect size for switch rods. It's just slightly bigger than the Abel Super 9 which should work beautifully as well. In my opinion, this is a very versatile size. I use mine on my single handers and as a backup to my full size spey rods. I don't like to give up large arbors, so I use very thin diameter backing (Tuf Line XP) so that I can still get an adequate amount of insurance on there.

Switch Reel

I have three different reels I use on my switch rod. A old SA system 9(Hardy), FlyLogic FLO 7/8/9 and a Speyco switch. All dependent what I am fishing for.

I will say the Speyco is my favorite and pretty reasonable($400-425) for a custom made reel. It freakin sings with a fish on.

From what I understand, you have to upsize 1 or 2 reel sizes. I have an 11ft 8 wt, switch rod and had a Hardy Marquis Salmon #1 on it which was great for my Sage XP 9wt SH rod, and although it was manageable on the switch with 150 yds of backing, it was tight. I always had to be careful winding the line in. Now I have a Lamson Radius 4 mid arbor on it and have no problem. Again it depends on how much backing you have( ie what you're fishing for). I'm fishing for Atlantics. It also should balance your rod(at least I like it to)and the bigger reel helps with that.

Good luck.

I have a Lamson Velocity 4 original Hard Alox. Smaler size than the new Velocity 4. Closer to the Lamson Konic 4. Works great.

I fished a Lamson Guru 3.5 on my old Beulah 11' switch. matched perfectly and was balanced beautifully

you best bet is to take the rod into the store and try reels on it and find what fits best. I like mine to balance my rod with the reel empty so that its a little butt heavy with line on it, doing this creates a setup where when your swinging the tip of the rod will cradle in your hand level with the water so your not fighting holding the tip up all day long.

If you wanted to go the classic route; a Bougle 3 3/4", Zenith, or Perfect 3 5/8" are about as classy as it gets, .

when are the reel manufacturers going to get around to making a switch reel?
if the rod makers can make a short two hander and call it a switch, why cant reel makers make a smaller big reel and call it a switch? sure would save us all alot of confusion

switch

I have several Abel super series reels and the Super 8 works great to balance my Burkie 7127. I have the standard spool with a 420 compact scandi and the Large Arbor with 400 Scandi. Works great. Love the Abels.
