Pheasant Rump

I have not used white pheasant but I have used ring neck rump feathers for spey hackle. The only real problem I had was that the feather stems where rather brittle and prone to breaking. More recently I tried the Whiting Spey hackle and although expensive, worked like a dream.

I was looking at Whiting spey too, but cant find a supplier with colors I need. What did you used, was it cape or saddle, cock or hen? I think Birdfur is same half cut hen saddles and they did not look like a usable feather for spey (too thin and marabou'ish), should be a great popsicle feather dough.

Could I use ringneck for alec jackson 1.5 still? I have heard they are only good for small speys.

I have used the Whiting cock necks. Really long fine flowing hackles. As far as the ringneck for a AJ 1.5, you can find them on a pelt but not s whole lot of them. A plus with the pheasant pelts is there are loads of useable feathers for other tying besides hackles.
Here are a couple of flies tied with the Whiting hackle.

domantas,

White pheasant (which is really an albino Chinese Pheasant) rump makes for a very good spey hackle, as does Chinese Pheasant rump. Yes, there are feathers on Chinese Pheasant rumps that will tie AJ #1.5 hooks, just not multiple dozens of them-more like 2 dozen at most on a rump. There are quite a few that will tie #3 AJ hooks. If you wish to use Chinese Pheasant rump on #3/0 AJ hooks, you will have to use 2 feathers (possibley 3 feathers) to do so. Shewey's Spey and Dee book has excellent instructions with photos on how to use more than one Chinese Pheasant rump feather in series to tie a spey or dee fly.
