Gear & Pawl vs Disc/Drag

Ok......

I am thinking of buying my first, serious reel and I am trying to convince myself to "man up" and buy a G&P reel. On the other hand I am an engineer and believe that disc/drags were designed for a reason.

How many fish do you really loose with a G&P?
