There are no line restrictions after Nov 1, I believe, and no line restrictions except for no lead core in 2002. Flies must be unweighted, and strike indicators are prohibited (except for the use of a bubble with spinning/casting gear). Of course, check the final regs in case I'm wrong. As for whether the trip makes sense, it depends upon whether you expect to catch fish. If you expect to catch fish, then no, it does not make sense for someone who doesn't know the river to begin with. It can be a darn hard place to catch a fish in the summer. However, you are right that you should have an uncrowded and intimate first experience. Of course, it was pretty uncrowded and intimate whenever I was there this fall. There will be fish there, and if you time it right so the river is not unreasonably high, you might have a chance. However, in a lot of places the river runs pretty good even in a low-water summer--it's a canyon river, after all--so you'll have fun editing the water to find reasonable places to fish. The famous summer "Camp Water" around Steamboat might be a good try though--I think the Boat pool should be excellent, but I haven't fished it in winter. (Of course, being--like you--one who craves solitude, I hardly ever fish the Camp Water in summer/fall. I didn't fish the Camp Water at all in my 10 days on the river this fall, despite the lack of crowds.) As for Steamboat Inn, my recollection is that they are largely closed Jan and Feb, but I'd call to check that. Bill |
