sea trout on the teifi

As I assume this is a sea run brown area ,here goes Last weekend 12 Westend flyfishers iut of the Sharpes shop in LondonUk headed west on the M4 to llandysul in swest wales . We arrived in dribs and Drabs at various times in the arternoon at the very hosp[table Porth hotel and then made reconnaisance of the river , .the river was running with a milky tinge due to the first major rain in three weeks but not very high . REturning too the hotel for early dinner we were met by Three of the wise men of the local angling assocaition who were very helpful with information and even a goody bag of flys <alexandras+peter ross,s > after some excellent supper and a breif visit too the bar we hit the river at a variety of spots . the night was not kind pre dusk I raised a salmon to a wee shrimp pattern and that was my lot for the entire night of too bed after breakfast ... the other guys had trickled of too the comforts of slumber earlier in the morning and were much more fit for the following night so that shortly after 3 the next night as I was getting into my bed 3 guys were having a whale of a time as the sewin<welsh for seatrout > had come on . despite my and others lack of fishwe had a great time and are heading that way mid september for the salmon .

How far were you from Llandysillio,Cardigonshire? Which is where my ancestors are from.

I think the correct spelling is Llantysillio. But then I am half way around the world and the info I have is so old it still has the gogo after all the names.

Hi , at my finger tips only have 1:50,000 map whichshows both spellings at 40+50 odd miles away as the crow flys what with the Welsh hills and valleys it could be a long way away .. well worth a visit lovely coutryside probably best in the spring .

Hi Andy,this brings back great memories for me, I was born and raised in N Wales and learned to fly fish on the River Clywd. We used to fish all night for Sewin just below St Aspah, I had some fun times on that river.I fished all the traditional patterns at first and then i read Sea Trout Fishing by Hugh Falkus and i changed to all his patterns,they worked for me!!. I still have a box of them i tied up over 20 years ago,man time passes,i must get back there and wet a line,that would be fun.I tell you when i was growing up back there i had no idea i would end up living in Central Oregon and guiding on the Deschutes River, life throws some curves at you.J D both spellings are right,it is not uncomon to have the English and the Welsh Spellings for towns in Wales,they just say them different.tight lines,brian

Brian , glad to have evoked ,good memories , if you or any other fishers are passing through London , i,m always up for achat and can help you get onto all kinds of U K fishing ,even the Test /Itchen if you want to spend big money , Lots of less expensive fishing the further one gets away from london , Have a great day out here

Hi Andy.   Reviving this old thread as I've seen several references of late to "Sea Trout." What (for we ex-pat Canadians) are these? I'm sure it's a UK reference to some actual adrom. fish. Tnx Fred

Hi, Fred sea trout ,at least over here are ,brown trout that go tto sea feed up and come back too fresh water too breed . Agreat fish usually fly caught by river fishing int he dark off the nite , they also can be caught in daylight when the rivers are high and they respond too bait +hardware One of my favorite ways of catching them ,is from a drifting boat some where in the hebridean Isles or the west coast of Ireland will dig out the adress for hoppys sea trout site it will give you an overveiw of welsh sea trouting and links too a fascinating small forumn used by Welsh seatrour nuts

Andy, Thanks for the web site. I've made it a "favorite place" so I can go back and review after I log off the board. But the fly fishing in the dark sounds interesting, if not a bit dangerous!   Given you're fishing after dark what kind of patterns do you use to get their attention. And by the photo's I can understand why you'd want to get their attention. fe

Fred , glad you like Hoppys site , its forum is good during the season but has wound down now . fishing fly in the dark is great fun even tho its rare tyat its so dark that you cant see ,you workout your wading /fishing points during daylight or on previous visits and yes i have fallen in several times and it can get very spooky when the nite shift animals come on and the grunts howls +barks come out of the woods even a heavy breathing sheep can scare the wits out of you . Fly patterns range from 3"+streamers /tubes down too #16 wee double spiders +include big bomber type flies with trailing trebles . different rivers have different favorites .my favorite fly is the haslam a dovey favorite basicly brown wing silver body . keep on fishing Andy
