TMC 7989 Too lite 4 Stlhd?

I've been tying some steelhead drys on Tiemco 7989 and hope to use them for Thompson steelhead. On the Bulkley this fall, a friend had one of these hooks straighten out on a robust fish. Am I asking for trouble using this hook or did my friend experience a one time event in losing the fish? Anyone else had problems? They look a tad "gracefull" and I don't want to take all day to bring in any potential captures.   Thanks for any help, Greg

Yes these hooks are way to light and I have had them open even on relatively small trout!  A solution is the daichi  Bob Ververka hook,  a classy and strong hook.

Your friend is correct. A TMC 7999 is about a very good hook for wets. A TMC 200R works well for a lite wire Steelhead hook. For top water try the TMC 905BL, Mustad 3906B. Both have a wide gap and work well for wakers and skaters. Good luck, Leroy..................
