Skagit casting struggle
Until now I have mainly fished with Scandi set ups. Got myself a Beulah classic 13 ft #8/9 , airflo Skagit 575 gr. and looped an intermediate polyleader and 4 ft of seagull on to that. Struggling with the landing, the fly and polyleader tend to land before or at the end of the Skagit line. I am using the snap t cast and give a good pull with underhand. Am I using to much power ? Should I slow down ? Any tips greatly appreciated.

aim at the top of the trees on the far side of the river, not where you want the cast to land. Slow down, nice and easy, let the rod do it's thing , the cast should be effortless ... Start there-

10' of t8 or t11 might make for a smoother turnover than an intermediate polyleader on that skagit line. Unless you have a 15' polyleader- that shouldnt be too bad.

I always tell my friends that are trying skagit casting for the first time to throw it just hard enough for the head to unroll. That way you try not to over power it. My friend Aaron has been fishing with me and he watches me while I am casting and it makes him realize just how slow you have to go to get a good cast.
I would also put a sink tip on it instead of poly leader. I found out I cast skagit lines better with a heavier tip but that could be just my style of casting. I am no expert by a long shot just thought I would try to help. Keep us posted and let us know how you do. Dan |
