red truck diesel reels

Hi just looking for some feed back on the red truck diesel reels. Has any one tried them. I seen the 7/8 on line wondering if it was good for light spey. Thanks.

Diesel reels

Too small.

Was told by Red Truck last fall, that switch/spey sizes of their reel should be seeing production by early spring 2012.
Maybe check with them on larger reel's progress?

not the worst reel ever made but I would go with a hardy if I were you. I have a 5/6 and its ok but I dont like it nearly as much as my other hardy reels.

I own the 7/8 in both the Classic Drift and the Diesel and use them for light spey work so scandi/skagit heads 330grains or less with plenty of backing. I also own the double handle Sea Run which can run 125-150 yards of backing and a 450 grain head.

I love their reels, great clicking, inexpensive and tough as nails. For 375$ the Sea Run can manage a lot of line and is butter smooth

Hardy reels are fantastic reels too, so if it is between these manufactures, you can't lose.

I swapped the black plastic handle on my Diesel for a wood Abel handle, looks nice

When their double handle "Swing" reel modeled after the Classic Drift comes out, I'll buy it.

since they are both made in Korea, think they may come from the same place?

interesting point. RT claims the rods they make are made in the same place as other top notch rod makers, without naming names of course but they implied Orvis/Beulah/etc

Does it matter? Well, I suppose the price might matter to some. I have been openly critical of hardy charging what they do for Korean reels, though I love their reels. I'm going fishing, I'll take some pics of the reels, but the quality is better than good and I beat my stuff pretty hard

I also like supporting a start up, but like every business out there, RT/Leland has made their mistakes with some customer service. I like Burke and the gang though and I think if they can keep their prices modest and build a name for themselves in this niche market, they will be very successful. I think the prices, depth of products, and service will sink or save them obviously. East Asian production quality has come light years imo

Burke has excellent aesthetic taste, very traditional which I enjoy. Some don't, but I'm glad the reels and rods are designed the way they are

from a capacity perspective, I find their existing reels too narrow relative to diameter, particularly in the larger sizes

For what kind of fish?

You'd be hard pressed to have a fish run the line off the spool with exception of large steel/salmon.
