A gang of 4-6 Wisconsinites are planning to hit the Clearwater in October. Any advice on fly patterns would be much appreciated.
Combs' book only mentioned the purple muddler & assorted bombers. What else???
TIA,
Bob B

It will probably be low --real low and clear. Bring some #8-10 lady carolines tied on #5or 7 alec jackson spey hooks. also bring gb skunks, muddlers and #6 Humpys(the trout fly). Tie purple muddler with pearl krystal flash in underwing and tail. Bring some October caddis too. Try the Grande Ronde river, too if you got some time.

I would not be too concerned with fly patterns.  Bombers or muddlers work just fine for skating dries.  As for wets (or any fly), ANYTHING does and will work, it just comes down to personal preference or superstition.  Any of the general steelhead patterns listed in Comb's book will suffice.  You can tie them small and catch fish, or you can tie them large and catch fish.  Don't limit yourself into thinking this rivers fish only respond to #8 or #10 low water ties, these fish also take 8" plugs at a rate better then any flyfisher will produce.  So keep that in mind when dressing your hooks.  I do have one tip to offer from personal experience, the 3 and smaller Alec Jackson hooks (or any fine wire hook) do have a tendancy to straighten out, even with the A run fish.  I now, cause I keep it simple, tie my Clearwater flies on the Alec Jackson heavy wire #3's.  These hooks will not bend on a good fish, as well I can tie small low water style or full dress to the bend.

Good luck this fall, as there should be good numbers of B's available.

You catch bigger fish than I do, obviously.
