I have been using my fly rod on largemouth bass mostly. I did try my hand at nymphing this past spring with my singlehander with some sucess. From what I have read its all about swinging flies with a 2 hander correct? So I guess I am looking for a book that talks about line and leader setup, flies selection (when to use what). Is there such a book?
After yearly bonefish and tuna trips the call of the Skeena has gotten louder and louder. I love fishing the flats and a 300 yd run from a Tuna is incredible but absolutley nothing beats a square tail rising to a waked dry fly. I have started cruising this site again and wow have things changed in the Spey world. Switch rods, skagit lines and more types of casts than you can shake a long stick at. I guess it's time to go back to school.

i see some of the guys who post in the fly tying thread the varieties of the above flies which some of you guys tie superb flies, so much so that i would not want to wreck them by letting a fish have a chew on them, but i refer to classics like the green butt skunk (a fly i have become very fond of, even seen them as a tube and a humpy variant, awesome colour combo) and the orange herron etc.
My question is do you generaly fish these flies on a floating line with maybe flurocarbon leader as the only 'weight' or do you fish these deep on heavy tips etc?
I realise they are probably suitable for any depth you like but is there a level they excel at, like in a shallow swift head or tail of a pool and due to the lack of weight becides the hook they swim in maybe the top 1-2ft of the water? or do they excel at the opposite, in deep slow pools?

New to spay pages and a seasoned beginner with casting a spey rod (if that makes any sense). Been casting 3 fall/winter's. I choose a Sage 7wt VT2 w/ a <a href='http://www.speypages.com/speyclave/autolink.php?id=1&script=external&forumid=53' target='_blank' class='gal' onmouseover='GAL_popup(this,"1", 300, "style=\"border: 1pt solid #000000;\"", "RIO designs and manufactures the world's most advanced fly lines, leaders and tippets because we actually fish them. Really have enjoyed it. I've spent a good amount of hours getting used to the rod and casting it. The thing I've noticed in the Skagit is that its shorter bellied line and it's been great to learn with and good for smaller rivers. I haven't spent much time with a sink tip. It might be good for that too, not sure.
I'm wondering what be a good next step for in a line that would work bigger water more effectively (delta air flow?). Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks,
